Dispatchers were able to call the driver to check on their status for deliveries, provide driver load information, and ensure the driver was still safe.

Now many trucking companies and brokers are using the smart-phone to track equipment and freight.

And with all the fun apps, a cell phone is a mini computer, that we all love to play games on, check social media post, the weather, news, and so much more.

In 2012, truckers could no longer to hold a cell phone while driving.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) researched the relationship between mobile phones and highway accidents, confirmed that unsafe driving was 6 times higher while hold a phone.

  • Drivers were more likely to swerve while trying to dial a phone.

  • Texting while driving, takes a driver’s attention and thoughts away from their immediate surroundings.

  • Drivers were not paying attention to the traffic around them.

  • Drivers were reaching across the cab of the truck to reach the ringing phone.

What happens if your caught holding a cell phone?

According to FMCSA's website,

  • A Commercial Moving Vehicle driver can lose their license.

  • A driver may be fined a penalty of up to $2,750, while the company may be fined up to $11,000.

  • Fines are not the only repercussions. Every trucking company has a CSA score, providing information about a company’s safe driving records, including speeding tickets, vehicle inspections, and accidents.
